Dishwasher Water at Bottom After Cycle? What Is Normal and What Is Not

Finding water inside a dishwasher after a cycle does not always mean the drain pump has failed. Some designs retain a small amount of water in a sump below the filter. Standing water above the normal sump area, especially when it covers the tub floor, deserves closer attention.

Start by locating the water

Is the water visible only beneath a removable filter or pooling across the bottom of the tub? Consult your model’s manual for what is normal. Do not put your hand into water if broken glass or sharp debris may be present.

1. Confirm the cycle actually finished

A paused or canceled program may not have completed its normal drain. Check for error codes and follow the model’s documented cancel/drain function if one exists.

2. Check for a user-serviceable filter

After the dishwasher is off and cool, inspect the filter only if the manufacturer describes it as removable by the user. Remove debris with care, following the manual. Never reach into a pump opening or force an assembly.

3. Observe the sink and garbage disposal

If the dishwasher drains through the sink plumbing, note whether the sink itself is slow or backed up. A shared blockage can affect drainage. Do not use chemical drain cleaners in the dishwasher.

4. Consider the drain hose route

Drainage depends on the correct hose installation, including a high loop or air gap where required. Inspect only visible sections and compare them with local plumbing requirements and the appliance’s installation manual. Do not pull out the machine or disconnect wastewater lines as an experiment.

5. Listen for the drain stage

Some machines make a distinct pump sound near the end of the cycle. Record whether the sound occurs and whether the water level changes. Noise alone cannot confirm that a pump is healthy.

6. Check for repeated backups

If water returns after the machine has drained, a plumbing or backflow issue may be involved. Note whether it happens after sink use. A plumber or appliance technician may need to inspect the installation.

7. Stop if there is leakage or an electrical concern

Do not run repeated cycles if water is escaping onto the floor, a breaker trips or wiring may be wet. Stop use and arrange qualified service.

What to record

  • Approximate water level and location
  • Whether the cycle completed
  • Any drain error code
  • Sink drainage behavior
  • Whether water returns after the machine is off

FAQ

Is a little water below the filter normal?

It can be on some models. Check the manufacturer instructions for your dishwasher.

Does standing water prove the drain pump is broken?

No. Filter obstructions, hose routing, plumbing backups and interrupted cycles can produce similar symptoms.

Can I use chemical drain cleaner in the dishwasher?

Do not use household drain chemicals unless the appliance manufacturer explicitly permits a product and procedure.

Manufacturer documentation

Drain systems differ across brands and models. Consult the manual matching the model number before removing a filter or attempting a cancel/drain sequence. For a model-specific starting point, see Bosch guidance for dishwashers that are not pumping water and Bosch guidance on cleaning a dishwasher filter. Bosch recommends checking the filter and owner-accessible pump area and contacting service if drainage still fails. Do not generalize Bosch disassembly instructions to other brands.

For Bosch-specific error codes, see our Bosch dishwasher E24 and E25 troubleshooting guide. This article does not claim hands-on testing of any appliance.
