A dishwasher drain pump moves used water out of the dishwasher through the drain hose. If water remains in the tub, the pump is not automatically the problem: a clogged filter, blocked hose, or obstructed sink connection also stops drainage. What does a dishwasher drain pump do?
At the end of a wash or rinse, the dishwasher’s control activates draining. The drain pump pushes water through the drain hose toward the sink drain, air gap, or garbage disposal connection.
The drain pump and circulation pump have different jobs. The circulation, or wash, pump moves water through the dishwasher during washing; the drain pump sends that water out. Their physical arrangement depends on the design. Some dishwashers have a separate drain pump. Others use one motor with separate circulation and drain compartments, each with its own impeller, or use the main pump with a drain solenoid and a diverter valve or flapper.
The drain hose’s high loop or a working air gap also matters: it helps prevent wastewater from flowing back into the tub.
Signs of a drain problem
- Water remains after a completed cycle. First distinguish this from an interrupted cycle that never finished draining.
- The filter is clean, but the pump hums without water draining. This is a documented symptom pattern associated with drain-pump failure on GE dishwashers.
- The pump stays silent during the expected drain stage. This is another documented failure pattern on GE dishwashers.
- A drainage error returns. GE’s drain-related codes distinguish extended pump-out times from a failure to drain.
These symptoms call for checking the drainage path, not immediately replacing the pump. Whirlpool identifies filter and sump debris, a kinked or blocked hose, a problem at the sink or disposal connection, and a jammed pump among drainage causes. Timer, drain-solenoid, and control-board faults are less common causes.
Checks to make before calling for service
Before any physical inspection, disconnect the dishwasher from electrical power at the breaker or outlet and close its water-supply valve. Keep it disconnected while handling the filter or hoses. The checks below concern accessible drainage components, not pump disassembly or electrical testing.
- Confirm that the last cycle finished. Use the cycle status you observed, such as an illuminated “Clean” indicator. An interrupted wash can look like a drainage failure.

- Check the shared drain connection. With any disconnected hose reattached and hands and tools clear, run the garbage disposal to clear a blockage in the shared drain path. Do not run it while inspecting its inlet.
GE drain-related error codes
For GE dishwashers that display the following codes, use these meanings and actions. Do not apply them to Whirlpool models or treat every drainage code as a pump-motor diagnosis.
- C1: Pump-out during draining has exceeded 2 minutes.
- C2: The total pump-out cycle has exceeded 7 minutes.
- C3: The dishwasher will not drain. GE instructs the owner to disconnect power at the circuit breaker for about 30 seconds, then restore power to reset the dishwasher. If the problem persists, contact service.
- C4: The dishwasher filled twice after a power failure. Associated causes include a stuck or failed float switch or a clogged drain or sump. GE’s homeowner action is to tap the float cover to free it and check the sump for debris. Contact service if the problem persists.
When to stop and call a technician
If the filter and accessible drain path are clear, the disposal inlet is unobstructed, and standing water or an error code persists, contact service. Manufacturers direct owners to service at this point rather than continuing disassembly.
