Water inside or underneath a full-size refrigerator can come from a filter connection, water tubing, a door that does not seal properly, or a blocked defrost drain. Work through the checks below in order, skipping water-system components your refrigerator does not have.
Before you start
Unplug the refrigerator before maintenance or cleaning related to the leak to reduce the risk of electric shock. Locate the household water shut-off valve before working on a water connection.
If you need to pull the refrigerator out, avoid straining its water line. Whirlpool recommends leaving a service loop in copper or PEX tubing so the appliance can move out for cleaning or service without pulling on the connection.
1. Check the water filter
Confirm that the filter is a genuine filter intended for the refrigerator and is correctly installed and locked in place. Inspect the filter cap, housing, and fittings for moisture. If the filter is not seated correctly, reinstall it using the model’s filter-locking procedure.
What to look for: a locked filter with a proper seal and no visible moisture around the housing or connections.
For Whirlpool refrigerators, the usual filter-replacement interval is about every six months, or sooner depending on the model. An overdue filter is worth addressing, but also check its installation rather than assuming replacement alone will stop the leak.
2. Inspect the water supply line behind the refrigerator
Follow the tubing from the household shut-off valve to the back of the refrigerator. Check for cracks, kinks, and loose connections at both ends. Tubing should be firmly inserted into its fittings, with no visible water behind the appliance.
If an LG refrigerator’s rear water line is cracked, split, or kinked, turn off the saddle valve and arrange repair service. This is not a connection-tightening fix.
On some Whirlpool models, water under the door comes from the dispenser water line rather than the main supply connection. If the rear connections are dry but water is appearing at the door, include that line in your inspection.
3. Check the ice maker fill line
If the refrigerator has an ice maker, inspect the copper or plastic fill line running from the water valve to the ice maker. Look for looseness, splits, and drips.
For a loose connection, shut off the water before tightening it. The line should be intact and firmly connected, with no dripping; tightening a fitting does not address a split in the tubing.
4. Check the refrigerator’s leveling
Use a carpenter’s level to check the refrigerator side-to-side and front-to-back. Samsung’s leveling guidance calls for the appliance to sit level side-to-side with a slight backward tilt, adjusted using the front leveling legs. This position helps the door seal tightly and directs drainage toward the back.
Keep the adjustment specific to your model’s leveling setup rather than applying a measured tilt from another refrigerator.
5. Inspect the door gasket
Check the seal around the door for debris, loose sections, or areas that have detached from their groove. The gasket should sit fully in its groove, and the closed door should have no gaps in the seal.
For a dirty LG door gasket, clean it with a hot, damp towel. After cleaning, keep the door closed for at least two hours so the gasket can reseal properly.
6. Look for a clogged defrost drain
Check for ice on the freezer floor, under the bottom freezer basket, or beneath the crisper drawers. These are places to investigate when defrost water is not draining away.
If the drain is accessible
On GE side-by-side refrigerators, ice beneath the bottom freezer basket together with a puddle on the floor is a typical blocked-drain sign, and many of these models allow homeowner access. If your model allows DIY access, locate the drain hole and flush it. GE recommends a bulb baster with a baking-soda-and-hot-water solution.

If access requires disassembly
On GE top-freezer and bottom-freezer models, reaching the defrost drain tube usually requires disassembly. For those models, schedule a technician rather than taking the refrigerator apart to clear the drain.
Use the access instructions for your specific refrigerator to decide whether flushing is a homeowner task. An accessible drain on one model does not make the same repair accessible on another.
