Whirlpool dishwasher not draining: what to check first

A Whirlpool dishwasher that leaves water behind may have a clogged filter, debris in the sump, a kinked or blocked drain hose, or an obstruction at the garbage disposer or sink connection. A jammed drain pump is another possibility, but start with Whirlpool’s owner-level checks before assuming a part needs replacement.

Follow the checks below in order. For a newly installed dishwasher or a recently replaced garbage disposer, pay particular attention to the disposer’s dishwasher inlet plug.

Safety: Before working on the disposer or under-sink drain connection, disconnect power to both the dishwasher and disposer by unplugging them or switching off their circuit breakers; never put a hand inside the disposer chamber—use tools instead.

Work through these drainage checks

1. Check the garbage disposer knockout plug

If the dishwasher drain hose connects to a garbage disposer, confirm that the knockout plug has been removed from the disposer’s dishwasher inlet. A plug left in place is a frequent cause of drainage trouble on new installations.

If you disconnect the drain hose to inspect that connection, place a bucket or bowl underneath to catch water remaining in the hose. If the plug is still present, have it removed according to the disposer’s installation instructions before reconnecting the hose.

2. Compare the remaining water with the normal filter-area level

Some water in the filter area is normal. Whirlpool describes water roughly halfway up that area as expected: it keeps seals from drying out and drains and is replaced during the next cycle. That small amount alone does not mean the dishwasher has a drainage problem.

If water extends beyond that normal amount, inspect the filter area for food and foreign objects. Carefully remove visible debris before taking out removable filters so objects do not fall into the opening.

For models with an upper filter assembly and lower filter, rinse the filters under running water. Use a soft brush for stubborn soil or calcium deposits—not a wire brush or scouring pad. Reinstall the lower filter securely and lock the upper assembly in place; if the upper assembly turns freely, it is not locked. Do not operate the dishwasher without its filters properly installed.

Some models instead use Whirlpool’s Filter Style 2 maintenance-free system, with a foreign-object cup in front of and below the lower rack. On that design, depress the tab and lift the cup to empty it; it does not require regular filter cleaning.

3. Check the drain and disposer for obstructions

Look for food or other obstructions in the drain or garbage disposer, following the safety precautions above. Use long-handled tongs or pliers to remove an object from the disposer.

After clearing the obstruction and restoring the disposer to normal operating condition, run it to clear the drain connection. Replace any removed parts and panels before operating the appliances.

4. Check the air gap, if installed

Inspect the air gap and its vent for clogs, following the air-gap manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. A working drain air gap helps prevent wastewater from flowing back into the dishwasher.

Water spilling or spitting from the countertop air-gap cap is a reason to check for a blockage, including in the outlet hose or disposer connection—not automatically a reason to replace the fitting. Clear food and buildup as directed by its manufacturer, and check the hose between the air gap and the disposer or waste tee for blockage.

5. Look for excess suds

Check whether hand-washing dish soap was used instead of dishwasher detergent. Dish soap creates suds that can interfere with drainage. If you see bubbles or soap foam, turn the dishwasher off and allow the suds to dissipate. Use detergent intended for automatic dishwashers.

6. Inspect the drain hose and its routing

Following the earlier safety precautions, check the drain hose for kinks and straighten any you find. Especially after a new installation, verify that the hose follows the correct route on the proper side and inside the frame, as specified in your model’s installation instructions.

Also check that the installed drain arrangement matches those instructions. A proper high loop or working air gap helps keep wastewater from returning to the dishwasher. Do not remove an air gap or change the drain arrangement without checking the installation instructions and applicable local plumbing requirements.

7. Cycle power and check whether the problem returns

Once the checks are complete and all connections, filters, parts, and panels are back in place, cycle power to the dishwasher by turning its power off and back on. Check whether it drains normally or the same problem or error code returns.

When to stop and schedule service

If the drainage problem or the same error returns after these checks and a power cycle, Whirlpool advises scheduling service. That is the point to stop owner-level troubleshooting and contact a qualified technician rather than dismantling the drain pump or replacing electrical components.

Whirlpool identifies F9E2 as a potential drain motor error, but its troubleshooting still starts with the disposer plug, drain obstructions, hose kinks, and hose routing. The code alone is not an instruction to replace the pump. For other codes, use your model’s documentation because exact code meanings vary by model.

Beyond the accessible obstructions and installation issues above, Whirlpool lists a jammed drain pump and, less commonly, a malfunctioning timer, an older-design drain solenoid, or a control board as possible causes. Determining which, if any, applies is a job for the technician.
